The Best-Dressed Rooms

FORMULATED is the Tortuga Forma journal about the rituals we create around the home, the objects that bring us joy, and the stories behind how things are made. Every object has a story.

The Best-Dressed Rooms

There's a version of a room that looks arranged and a version that looks lived in, and the difference usually comes down to one thing: nothing in it is there to match anything else. It's there because someone found it or reached for it — and it stayed.

Rooms inside a 16th century Spanish home

This is what that actually looks like. It's not a curated vignette but a cupboard containing stack of plates in daily rotation, and above them, a tureen that's been in someone's family for longer than anyone can remember. Both simply belong there.

Or a leather sofa broken in by the decades that props up pillows that still look brand new. It's the kind of contrast that feels inevitable in this room where one old piece anchors the room while something new finds its place in the conversation.

Rooms inside a collector's apartment in Brooklyn, NY

Inside a Brooklyn apartment, an Anton Alvarez string-wrapped bench anchors a wall dedicated entirely to art, hung salon-style and an array of well-loved objects transform a side table. This is what it looks like when a true collector furnishes a room. Each piece was chosen because it was loved, and not because it matched or coordinated with anything around it. The result feels both surprising and inevitable when a traditional tribal mask is the backdrop to layers of hand-built ceramics and design books. We love imagining the pleasure this family had in putting the various elements of this room together.

Home from a slower European summer, I keep noticing the moments I choose the harder path on purpose — walking to the orchard with my in-laws, opening and closing windows for a house with no air conditioning. As fall settles back in, here's what that daily effort gives back.

    Japan's Ancient Plant Fibers

Long before cotton arrived in Japan, weavers worked with five ancient plant fibers: banana fiber, ramie, linden, hemp, and wisteria. This April, Tortuga Forma presented handwoven Japanese textiles rarely seen outside Japan at Sample House in Long Island City, NY.
